MONITOR: As we explore the concept of the Outer Self, we hope to reveal aspects of it that have not been clearly understood and, when understood, yield definite benefits.
Soul Purposes
The personality is projected by a Soul for two purposes. The first purpose involves giving the Soul opportunity to develop qualities and capabilities within the context of the given planet. The second purpose involves the Soul’s service in aiding the evolution of the Planetary Being, the composite consciousness of the planet. The Soul projects a personality into planets like Earth. It must project its Life force, because the polarized consciousness of Earth and its lower planes will not readily support a unified consciousness that has been constructed outside of Earth.
Establishment of Personality
When the Soul projects its Life force, animating Male and Female Selves in the mental plane who attract the Judge Selves into the personality, the Soul sets itself upon a course of experience. That course leads the personality into establishing itself as a distinctive expression, in its major aspects of Basic Selves and Judge Selves, an expression which learns to survive in the lower planes.
Each of the major Subconscious Selves of the personality are guided by the High Self, the Solar Angel who assists the development of the Soul. The Soul enters into a meditative state, investing its Life force in several human personalities and other beings. The High Self aids the Soul by guiding the growth of the personality in a way which benefits both the Soul and the Planetary Being.
Individualization, Karma and Re-embodiment
Subconscious Selves at first test the limits of their individuality. Once they learn how to survive in the lower planes, they have the opportunity to make their own choices. This independence of will is deemed absolutely essential to the growth of the Soul.
As the Selves make their choices, they often define their individuality by rebelling against the advice of higher consciousness. Their rebelliousness leads them into repeated encounters with the Law of Karma, which brings to them circumstances that they have created by their choices. As the Subconscious Selves become bogged down in repetitious choices, which act to their detriment or to the detriment of others, re-embodimentoffers them the opportunity to gain insight and change negative habits to more constructive habits. With re-embodiment in the physical plane, the Subconscious Selves are anchored into physical reality through the Body Self, who maintains, with considerable strength, a focus in the physical- etheric body.
Outer Self Aids in the Growth of Subconscious Selves
The interaction of the Subconscious Selves with the Body Self produces the Outer Self, our topic for tonight’s consideration. Viewed in this context, the Outer Self represents a new opportunity for the learning of the Subconscious Selves. It can be a tool, which the High Self can utilize to bring understanding and freedom to the Subconscious Selves. This represents the principal contribution of the Outer Self.
When its physical embodiment ends in transition from the physical to the etheric plane, the Outer Self is absorbed in the Subconscious Selves. It is not lost, but rejoins its family, so to speak.
From that position, the Outer Self continues its consciousness, learning how to integrate more fully and voluntarily with all of the other Outer Selves of the other lifetimes in the physical plane. The Outer Self, who has viewed itself as unique and special, learns that it is one of hundreds or thousands of expressions of the personality in the physical plane. It learns gradually how to release its limited views, how to clear its glamours and illusions, and how to produce more complete integration of the subconscious mind, especially in the Basic Selves. The Judge Selves do not participate as deeply in that process.
Participation in Attaining Spiritual Mastery
The Outer Self participates in the eventual achievement of the spiritual mastery of the personality. It then is raised into a higher level of understanding. By that time, it has realized that it gains most by contributing itself to the benefit of the whole personality. In contributing over many lifetimes, the illuminated Outer Self demonstrates to its Soul the value of the Soul performing a similar act in uniting with its creator, the Monad.
A Compassionate Plan of Growth
Each of you enters this discussion primarily from the viewpoint of the Outer Self. Your viewpoint is conditioned by what you regard as “physical perception.” That viewpoint, in our opinion, is biased. You therefore have challenges placed before you, when your High Self stimulates expansion of your awareness and motivates your search for greater truth.
The Outer Self of the personality may be isolated at some stages of personality evolution and integrated during other stages. When isolated, the Outer Self is overpowered by glamours and illusions. Much of the present world-view reflects that condition.
In such circumstances, Outer Selves regard themselves as isolated, perhaps products of biochemical accidents. Through the stimulation of the High Self, an Outer Self, even in such biased circumstances, begins to discover that its life experiences are not based upon the laws of statistics and random occurrences, but upon a compassionate plan of growth.
Growth through Relationship with Other Selves
The Outer Self grows primarily through connection with the High Self, Subconscious Selves, and Body Self. Through these relationships, its potential can be realized. If an Outer Self is willing to intentionally explore and maximize these relationships, it may accelerate its growth significantly.
We believe that we will open now for questions and discussion. What questions do you have?
Question and Answer
Q1: Reactions to Physical Appearance
JUDITH: I would like to know about human attraction. It appears that is largely based on the Outer Self and outer appearance, and yet there must be something underneath that involves a great deal of karmic work in our human interactions. I would like to know why physical appearance seems to be so important.
MONITOR: Reactions to the physical appearance of other persons comes mainly from the Subconscious Selves, not the Outer Self. Those reactions are based upon past experiences which normally come from other lifetimes. The Outer Self may have its own reactions, yet in terms of force or power, its reactions are considerably weaker than those of the Subconscious Selves.
JUDITH: Then the outer, physical form we have, if I understand correctly, is really the Body Self with the Outer Self?
MONITOR: Correct
JUDITH: With those two aspects working together, do we choose in this lifetime to have a specific outer appearance and personality, because of our need to interact with certain other people?
MONITOR: The Outer Self does not make that choice; the High Self does. The High Self considers priority lessons for the Subconscious Selves and selects the Body Self that provides the best vehicle for those lessons. The Outer Self is created out of the interaction of superconscious (e.g. the High Self Solar Angel) and subconscious (e.g. Male and Female Selves) levels of mind interacting with the Body Self.
Q2: Outer Self: Ego and Oge
DONNA: Monitor, could you tell me what the relationship is between the Outer Self and the Ego?
MONITOR: The concept of “Ego” is often identified with the Outer Self, but we prefer to give it a more precise definition. We regard Ego as a force of regression which arises mainly from the Subconscious Selves and to a lesser extent from the Outer Self.
You might say that part of the Outer Self may express as Ego or a force for regression in resisting growth, yet most of the Outer Self, in most physical lifetimes, is not so invested.
We prefer to credit the Outer Self with its fundamental impulse to grow. We coined the term “Oge,” which is ego spelled backwards, as a way of presenting credit to the Outer Self. The amount of Oge in the Outer Self normally outweighs the amount of Ego.
Q3: Major Glamours and Illusions of the Outer Self
JULIE: Could you tell us what are the principal glamours and illusions of the Outer Self?
MONITOR: Because the Outer Self needs to explore individuality through its range of choices, it normally suffers most from the illusion and glamour of separation, believing that it exists separate from the Life which animates the universe.
That illusion of the Outer Self is often reinforced by the illusions of Subconscious Selves. The glamours of the Outer Self are heavily reinforced by the glamours of the Subconscious Selves. The illusion and glamours of separation are likely to cascade into experiences of all of the other illusions and glamours possible in Earth conditions.
The Outer Self, who is able to clear some of its illusions and glamours, gains the benefit of being free from such hindrances. Upon physical transition, that Outer Self acts as a resource of clarity and wisdom within the subconscious mind of the personality.
The Outer Self, who does not achieve such clarification, continues its confusion when it is subsumed into the subconscious mind. It therefore benefits both the Outer Self and the personality for the Outer Self to achieve as much clearing of illusions and glamours as possible during its physical lifetime. Many spiritual traditions have emphasized this achievement.
Have we addressed your question?
JULIE: Yes. I would like to follow that question with others along the same line.
Q4: Major Fears of the Outer Self
JULIE: What are the major fears of the Outer Self, and how can they best be overcome? Also, most of us can relate to the fear of extinction. Does that come from the Outer Self, and if not, where does that come from?
MONITOR: The principal fear of an Outer Self consists of the fear of being alone and isolated. Other fears derive from it, and when viewed as glamours, they may be described as “fears based on self-pity.”
The fear of extinction comes, in part, from the Outer Self, who becomes aware that its vehicle, the Body Consciousness, has a finite lifetime and will inevitably move out of the physical plane. The Outer Self, who does not understand that its life continues beyond the physical plane, fears its extinction.
The fear of death, that is now experienced by the majority of persons throughout the world, represents a composite of separate fears, including the fear of extinction – which may involve the Outer Self, sometimes the Body Self, and sometimes the Judge Selves – plus the fears of the Basic Selves that they have not fulfilled their purpose for embodiment, or that their lives have not had meaning.
All of these fears derive from the illusion and glamour of separation. When that illusion and glamour are cleared even partially, such reactions become quite difficult to sustain, because the Outer Self and Subconscious Selves realize through repeated experiences that their lives are part of a greater Life, and no matter how much they may seem insignificant, their lives are truly significant in the greater Life.
Q5: Illness and the Outer Self
JULIE: I would like to know how the outside body deals with illness or healing. Because there is so much cancer going on right now, does the Outside Self play a role in that?
MONITOR: Do you mean the Outer Self?
JULIE: Yes.
MONITOR: The Outer Self, who experiences serious illness, such as cancer, is forced through pain and stress to seek spiritual connection and, through spiritual connection, healing. Such conditions are normally provided by the High Self as a means of assisting Subconscious Selves in learning their karmic lessons.
An illness, such as cancer, demonstrates in the etheric and physical bodies an unresolved set of conflicts. Those conflicts normally arise from different Subconscious Selves. They may arise from conflicting Basic Selves, conflicting Judge Selves, or conflicts among all of the Subconscious Selves. The Outer Self is presented with an etheric-physical demonstration of that conflict, which may motivate it to seek assistance which has not been sought by the Subconscious Selves involved.
The Outer Self performs a valuable service in seeking spiritual connection and resolution of conflicts, which members of the subconscious mind have not been willing to accept.
Serious illnesses will become even more prominent in the physical world during this time of transition for the Planetary Being. Many Outer Selves will confront the challenges of severe illness. Much assistance may be given to them through teachings that help them consider that their circumstances represent opportunities, not punishment. An Outer Self, who regards an illness in comprehensive fashion, can then accept those circumstances as an opportunity for growth.
Have we addressed your question?
JULIE: Yes.
Q6: Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
HELEN: Monitor, in the case of Alzheimer’s, what is the karmic cause?
MONITOR: We see a number of karmic causes and even some causes through the Law of Grace.
The condition now known as Alzheimer’s Disease, in our opinion, consists of three separate conditions that have not yet been fully distinguished by medical science.
One condition represents the outcome of physical karma, which has the purpose of assisting one or more Subconscious Selves to face, accept, and grow through such physical limitations. An example is a Male Self who has harmed the mind or brain of others and who retains a sense of guilt for those actions. The guilt requires reparation or punishment within the system of the Male Self’s values. The Male Self asks for that opportunity, and the High Self provides it sometimes in the form of victimization through the violence of others, and sometimes through a form of dementia. It assists the Male Self in releasing his guilt and opening to more positive options.
A second cause of Alzheimer’s Disease relates to the power struggle between Subconscious Selves, where one Subconscious Self has dominated that lifetime, forcing another Subconscious Self into distraction. The High Self may decide, in those circumstances, that much may be gained by disassociating the dominating Subconscious Self and allowing the more passive Subconscious Self an opportunity to receive the benefits of the etheric, physical existence. If that Subconscious Self remains fearful and unwilling to assume a full range of activity through the physical-etheric body, that body enters into a state of inactivity, which may be labeled as Alzheimer’s Disease.
The third condition of Alzheimer’s disease relates to the need for one or more Subconscious Selves to use the etheric-physical body as an anchor for its explorations and developments in the higher planes. For example, an overly submissive Female Self may be encouraged to explore various aspects of the astral plane, using the facilities there to develop her assertiveness and positive use of power. Her development will likely not be noticeable from the physical behavior of that body. If perceived clairvoyantly, her behavior and development may be recognized and assisted.
Yet in the current position of medical science, these three conditions behind Alzheimer’s Disease are not yet distinguishable. When doctors develop their clairvoyance and an understanding of the true scope of personality development, they will be able to render assistance in all three conditions.
MARY: Can all three conditions be there at the same time? A friend’s father died, and her mother was unable to believe that he was gone and soon developed Alzheimer’s. A lot of it appeared to be a guilt reaction.
MONITOR: We see, in that situation, what we have termed the first and second conditions.
QUESTION: Monitor, could the second condition you described be like a Male Self or a Mental Judge who has been domineering in the personality, not letting the other Selves express, and maybe they were moved aside to Alzheimer’s Disease so other Selves could come through?
MONITOR: Correct. Most often that is the case.
QUESTION: What happens when the Self who comes through is mainly full of anger and attack? Is that a Judge Self who has been repressed?
MONITOR: Often it is, yet not necessarily. Some Basic Selves will also express in that manner.
Consider what occurs to the Outer Self under the conditions of dementia. The Outer Self is almost erased from view, yet it continues within the interior of the personality. Under those conditions, the Outer Self loses ability to perceive the physical world and/or react physically. Under those conditions the Outer Self continues its development with tutoring from the High Self and Spirit Teachers, that it may continue its growth. However, that process is not visible from a physical perspective.
The Outer Self is never abandoned. It may abandon its spiritual connection, or its connection with the rest of the personality, yet the High Self and the Soul never abandon the Outer Self. It can be abandoned by Basic Selves and Judge Selves. It can be attacked and punished by them also, yet the Outer Self is given opportunities by the High Self in every circumstance, rendering that circumstance into an opportunity for growth on the part of the Outer Self.
[The audio cassette is turned to continue the recording.]
MONITOR: In the changing of the tape, you have a symbolic portrayal of the personality assuming a new Outer Self.
Dementia and the Outer Self
DONNA: Monitor, what is it you are describing? Is that the same as what happens to the Outer Self during a coma?
MONITOR: Yes, the Outer Self is not placed into stasis, but assisted to grow in the etheric and astral planes. Its activities in the physical plane are limited or curtailed. The High Self provides for its needs in the higher planes which it can perceive and accept.
In some cases, what is defined as “psychosis” presents similar circumstances, where the Outer Self has been dislodged from its position as the personality’s anchor in the physical and etheric planes. In that situation the Outer Self is helped to grow yet loses its strategic position as coordinator of the personality’s experience in the physical plane. The personality, in those circumstances, often reveals the fragmentation of the Subconscious Selves, who may engage in a power struggle for use of the etheric and physical bodies.
Q7: Multiple Personality Disorder and the Outer Self
JUDITH: Monitor, can we relate that to multiple personality disorder, where people express far more than seven Selves? Exactly what is going on in terms of the Outer and Inner Selves in multiple personality disorder?
MONITOR: Normally, in those conditions, one or both Basic Selves have been sufficiently traumatized that they retreat or disassociate, removing themselves from the responsibilities assigned to them by the High Self for care of the bodies and chakras.
When that occurs, imbalances occur in the bodies and chakras which may lead to expression of fragmented aspects of the Basic Selves and Judge Selves. Further, the unraveling of the integrity of the bodies may lead to the infiltration of external entities, human and otherwise, which may further complicate the picture.
Q8: Sociopathic Personality and the Outer Self
JUDITH: So, if we are talking about a sociopath who disassociates from everyone and is capable of harming people and animals, are we talking about someone’s Outer Self who is gone? Is there an entity or sub-Self who has taken over?
MONITOR: No, the Outer Self remains but may be stunted in its physical expression.
Different causes exist for the psychopath. One cause may derive from the plan of growth of a specific Subconscious Self who explores the use of power without sensitivity or compassion. Another cause may arise from the power struggle between Subconscious Selves, especially when the Female Self is overcome and pushed to the periphery of the personality, and the Male Self dominates, having learned some of the lessons of power but not having learned the lessons of Love.
JUDITH: Aren’t those Male Selves in that situation usually elemental?
MONITOR: Many of them are, yet many of them are outerspacial in quality. We would say perhaps 60 – 70 percent are elemental in quality, and the remainder outerspacial in quality.
JUDITH: Does it matter which type of Female Self they are with? Or is that unimportant, since the Female Self has been pushed aside?
MONITOR: Exactly. The Female Self has received a powerful lesson in the exercise of power. She must learn how to use power with at least equal force in order to support her expression of Love. Without that power, her ability to express Love is restricted, regardless of her type.
Q9: Integrative Steps for the Outer Self
JULIE: I know you have answered this question in many sessions and in many different ways, but just to sum this up, would you give us a step by step process for an Outer Self, who is finally fed up with suffering, chaos, pain, and illness? How can they start the process of integration? How can they begin to take charge, for a change?
MONITOR: The Outer Self, who is weary of suffering, will ultimately be motivated to empower itself. Its initial expression of empowerment may take the form of physical actions that it considers important, regardless of the viewpoints of Subconscious Selves or other personalities.
Eventually, the Outer Self learns that it will achieve significant relief only by making contact with higher consciousness and, specifically, the High Self. The Outer Self, who makes initial contact with the High Self, finds itself confronted with its glamours and illusions. It must then persevere in its purpose and continue contacting the High Self and requesting its assistance until the glamours and illusions are sufficiently cleared that it may express a continuity of spiritual connection.
Have we addressed the question?
JULIE: Yes, thank you.
Roles of the Outer Self
MONITOR: The Outer Self may be regarded as the anchor of the personality in the physical and etheric planes. It functions in that manner by using its will to cause the Subconscious Selves to confront their lessons and remain applied to the learning of their lessons.
The physical pain, experienced by the Outer Self and the Body Self, does not directly translate or communicate to the Subconscious Selves, yet the emotional stress, caused by physical pain, does communicate to them, forcing Subconscious Selves into their own reactions.
In that sense, the Outer Self acts as a feedback mechanism for the Subconscious Selves by helping them become aware of the consequences of their choices.
Further, the Outer Self serves as an initiator by using its own empowerment to promote a change in attitudes, viewpoints, emotional reactions, and behaviors on the part of Subconscious Selves.
An empowered Outer Self yields great benefit to Subconscious Selves, even though they may resent and resist its efforts at reform. The Outer Self functions at times as the agent of the High Self in bringing to the Subconscious Selves exactly those conditions they need for their learning. It can function sometimes as a teacher by channeling the wisdom of the High Self to a Subconscious Self who has not been willing to receive that wisdom directly.
The Outer Self can also follow a sequence of actions, when guided by the High Self without its knowledge. Those actions may dramatize or demonstrate what Subconscious Selves need to learn.
Structure of the Outer Self
The structure of the Outer Self has been partially understood by psychology. We describe it in terms of a core which forms around its point of awareness—what you may term “self-awareness.” In that core, the Outer Self recognizes its own action of will.
Beyond the core, in the periphery of the Outer Self, its awareness recognizes the actions and wills of other aspects of the personality and of other personalities.
If you picture the Outer Self as a wheel with its hub as the center of its will and awareness, and its rim as the point of intersection and transaction with the other Selves of the personality, you begin to gain valuable insights into its structure.
The will, at the hub of the Outer Self, is often stimulated by the High Self. The Outer Self often regards this as the action of intuition or divine intervention.
The area between the hub and rim represents a series of structures which the Outer Self uses to connect with or disconnect from the influences of other Selves and other personalities. In that area lie the perceptual filters, psychological defenses, and protective belief systems that serve the Outer Self. It needs those mechanisms, especially when it experiences disconnection from higher consciousness. When it gains connection with the High Self and beyond, the Outer Self is challenged to dismantle those protective mechanisms as much as possible.
Empowered Outer Self
An empowered Outer Self works diligently to free itself of illusions, glamours, and habits based upon illusions and glamours. It seeks to be creative and manifests the same creative impulse which originates from the Creator of the Universe. Through creativity, the Outer Self brings the power of the Soul into manifestation in the personality. The Outer Self does not need to depend upon the cooperation of Subconscious Selves to accomplish that.
Some Outer Selves face lifetime challenges caused by physical deformities, slavery, poverty, imprisonment, and other intense situations, as a way of motivating it to draw deeply upon its creative power. Its significant choice lies in its willingness to express Love and enlightenment no matter what the circumstances.
Do you have more questions?
JULIE: We seem to be through for the moment.
MONITOR: Then we suggest an exercise that may be repeated many times with accumulated benefit. We recommend that each one of you experiment with the process, which may take up to five minutes.
Experiential Exercise: Expansion of Outer Self Perception
MONITOR: First, choose a private place where you can spend five minutes. Then in that privacy, close your eyes and use your sense of feeling to be aware of all that you feel. Feel physical sensations, emotions, attitudes, or whatever. Give yourself time to be aware that your sensing represents your awareness as an Outer Self.
Once you have that comprehension, we recommend that you mentally ask your High Self to assist you in expanding that awareness. All you need do is ask your High Self, and it will respond either immediately or at some later time.
You may repeat this exercise as many times as you wish. You will find that your openness to expand your awareness as Outer Selves, will give you powerful experiences which will bring the gift you seek.
You may then appreciate how much more comprehensive your awareness becomes, as it extends beyond physical perception into etheric, astral, mental, and even causal perception. Such expansion of awareness represents your potential as Outer Selves.
You do not need to be limited by former habits, based upon illusions and glamours. If you but seek such expansion, you will obtain it at the rate at which you are willing to accept what it brings.
Conclusions
Symbolism of the Outer Self
In summary, the Outer Self serves a vital purpose for the evolving personality and its Soul. In some respects, the Outer Self symbolically represents each evolving Self in the personality and even the evolving Soul which creates the personality.
The Outer Self expresses the creative impulse of the Creator. Its consciousness is always linked with the consciousness of the Creator and with all of Life. The Outer Self is never isolated or separated from Life and its potential.
Potential for Spiritual Mastery
As it realizes the truth of that statement, the Outer Self gains empowerment. As it seeks Love and wisdom and synthesizes them in its actions, the Outer Self achieves spiritual mastery.
An Outer Self may sometimes achieve a higher degree of spiritual mastery than some of the Subconscious Selves in its personality. Such an Outer Self illumines the way for the Subconscious Selves. This expresses an important part of your potential.
We appreciate sharing with you about this topic. We look forward to an overview of the system called “Self Integration” at our next meeting.
We encourage you to practice with the exercise we have suggested, and, if you wish, you may report your experiences before we begin our discussion on the next occasion.
We bless each one, and we leave you.
